“Tomb Raider” stars very talented Alicia Vikander, as Lara Croft. This is an action packed surreal film that plays like a video game. Lara is a lost soul, who never accepted her father’s death. She preferred struggling rather than sign estate documents that would make her a millionaire. When Lara receives a clue about her father’s last adventure she is off and running, literally. In a letter that was left by her father, she is told to destroy all documents pertaining to Himiko and warned about the unsavoury “Trinity” organization. This is where any sense of reality ends and the true adventure begins. From Hong Kong, to the mysterious island of Yamatai, in search of Himiko, the mythical Queen of Yamatai. On the Island she is captured by agents for Trinity, ruthless, gun welding, slave-driving thugs who are trying to find the secret tomb. Unfortunately the audience does not have access to the game controller or a mouse and must sit back, to watch as Lara runs, jumps, climbs, scales, sky dives and falls, as she gets closer to solving the mystery of Himiko. Unexpectedly, the elements of a love interest don’t pan out. Not surprising are the weak character development, weak scrip and room for a sequel. Despite the roller coaster of action, I didn’t feel drawn into the story and I didn’t really care what was happening on the screen. Either something is missing or maybe it is just the elements of predictability. If you are compelled to see this film, it really should be on the big screen.
