Born in New York City, Mara Hobel became a working actor at a young age. Her first television appearance was in 1979 at the age of eight, in the TV movie 3 by Cheever: The Sorrows of Gin alongside Sigourney Weaver. Her next role was in the TV movie A Family of Strangers (1980) with Danny Aiello.

Hobel's major motion picture film debut came when she landed the role of Christina Crawford in Mommie Dearest (1981) starring with Faye Dunaway. Her performance as the abused daughter of film star Joan Crawford earned her many accolades, including being listed as one of 12 "Promising New Actors of 1981" in John Willis' annual book, Screen World, and a nomination for "Best Young Motion Picture Actress" at the 1982 Young Artist awards.

She has also appeared in plays such as Moose Murders in 1983 at the Eugene O'Neill on Broadway. In 1986, she landed a role with Tony Danza in the TV movie Doing Life, filmed in Canada. In the comedy Claire Makes It Big (1999), Hobel played the lead role of Claire, an actress who is constantly overlooked in favor of thinner actresses, so she decides to do something about it.

In 2002, she landed a supporting role in the feature Personal Velocity, alongside Kyra Sedgwick and Parker Posey.
