Born in Wurtzburg, Germany, Brian Dannelly grew up in the tiny Bavarian town before moving with his family at the age of 11 to a suburb of Baltimore, Maryland. After high school, he earned his Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts at The Maryland Institute of Art, then studied Visual Arts at the University of Maryland Baltimore County, graduating Magna Cum Laude. He went on to become a directing fellow at the American Film Institute (AFI) and graduated from the prestigious directing program in 1999. His short films, such as He Bop (2000), have played in festivals around the world.
While attending the AFI he met his writing partner, Michael Urban, with whom he wrote Saved! (2004). Starring Jena Malone, Mandy Moore and Macaulay Culkin, the film marked Dannelly's feature film directorial debut. Dannelly and Urban recently finished the script for their second film, Runner Up, about a beauty pageant held within a women's prison.
