Following the death of his wife, retired art historian Max Morden (Ciarán Hinds)retreats to The Cedars, a cottage by the sea where he spent summers as a child, in order to get the peace and quiet needed to write a book about French painter Pierre Bonnard.
While there, powerful memories from one fateful summer many years ago come flooding back. The memories are of innocent joy and uplifting warmth, but also of profound tragedy.
