Diana: In Her Own Words

In 1992, Princess Diana decided to help author Andrew Morton write a biography about her life by answering questions on a tape recorder to give to him. The subsequent book, Diana: Her True Story, rocked Britain and the Royal Family, as she spoke about numerous aspects of her personal life, including her unhappy marriage to Prince Charles.

She spoke about a romance she'd had at 24 with a mystery man, who was killed in a motorcycle accident. Diana also said she'd asked Queen Elizabeth for help with her marriage to Charles, but the Queen was unable to provide any answers. Diana admits she only met Charles 13 times before they were married and describes her unhappy childhood after her mother left her father—and the family home—for another man when Diana was just six years old.

She reveals that Charles commented on her weight during their engagement, which began years of bulimia and led her to drop several dress s in the weeks leading up to the wedding. She also states she was "absolutely traumatized" by Charles' famous response when he was asked if he was "in love" during an engagement interview in 1981, when he said "Yes," but then added, "Whatever 'in love' means."
