Date of Birth: August 24, 1957
A true Renaissance man, Stephen Fry is not only a successful writer, actor and director but is also known in his native Britain for his work with various charities.
Born in London, England, he grew up in Norfolk. While attending Queens College in Cambridge, he became involved with a theater group called Footlights. He wrote revues for them and eventually the troupe, which included Robbie Coltrane and Emma Thompson, made their way onto television in their own sketch comedy programs such as Cambridge Footlights Revue, Alfresco and The Crystal Cube.
Now well known for his writing ability, Stephen was asked to rewrite the musical Me and My Girl, which went on to enormous success, earning 11 Tony award nominations — including one for Stephen — (and winning three), and five Drama Desk awards.
Stephen made his feature film debut in The Good Father (1985), starring Anthony Hopkins. Roles in movies such as A Fish Called Wanda (1988), Peter's Friends (1992), I.Q. (1994), The Wind in the Willows (1996) and Gosford Park (2001) were interspersed with regular roles in TV series such as Blackadder II, This is David Lander, Blackadder Goes Forth, Jeeves and Wooster, Watership Down and Absolute Power, to name just a few.
In addition, he has written regularly for newspapers and magazines (including a weekly column in the Daily Telegraph) and published two novels, The Liar and Making History. Finally, Stephen decided to try on yet another hat and not only wrote but directed the feature film Bright Young Things (2004), based on a novel by Evelyn Waugh. He also starred in The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (2014) and Love & Friendship (2016).
Well known for his voice-overs and narration, Stephen recently voiced the character of Lord Piggot-Dunceb in Chris Butler’s animated film, Missing Link (2019).
In his spare time, Stephen enjoys watching cricket matches and flies his own classic biplane. He divides his time between homes in London and Norfolk. In 2015, he married his longtime companion, Elliot G. Spencer.
