This movie, based on the comics, was simply astonishing. I cant believe the number of in-depth references to the folk tales and "classic" horror movies. Story . . . Amazing. Effects . . . Wow. This may not be movie of the year, but it sure was worth my movie ticket.

movie sux so bad it`s not funny

The film had the potential to be a fun frolic through horror history. Unfortunately, it relies on flashy visuals to prop up the dead writing. Van Helsing does it`s best to keep the action non-stop, but at the cost of everything that makes a film worth seeing.

Van Helsing is a special effects roller coaster. It was entertaining, so long as you can bear through its weak elementary storyline. After seeing that Lord of the Rings proves that just because you have the best special effects in the business, doesnt mean you have to cheap out on the dialogue and acting, you`d think the competition would follow suit, but so far noboady has, especially not Van Helsing. Good for the kids, but I`d rather watch Bram Stokers Dracula again.

I think it is a terrific movie!

Van Helsing is a spine-tingling, eye-popping extravaganza for kids. Too bad the movie is also brain dead, like Frankenstein`s mutant creation before the lightning strikes. As a result, Stephen Sommers` new Gothic monster mash, more so than his remake of The Mummy and much like The Mummy Returns, is all about the visuals. Meanwhile, the preposterous plot here is laughable. At least it is for adults who need something more sophisticated to make them feel like frightened children again, which is the emotional raison d`etre of the genre, after all.

``Van Helsing`` isn`t based on a comic book or a video game or a line of action figures, although it bears a resemblance to all three. No, ``Van Helsing`` is based on the Universal Pictures marketing department`s tumescent desire to re-imprint its brands onto the minds of a new generation. Translated into English, that means we haven`t had a good Frankenstein, Dracula, or Wolf Man movie in a long time, so here`s one where the whole gang shows up. One catch: It`s not good. But that`s secondary. A movie like this is just a beachhead for the eventual theme-park ride.
