The heart of this movie is the relaionship between Luca and the loving Mary Wallace, played by Joan Plowright. As secretary to Luca's father, who placed his illegitimate son(Luca) in an orphanage, she takes Luca into her home and cares for him. Joan Plowright in this role provides the overall love and concern for the boy. She enlists the help of the other English expatriate ladies known as the"Scorpioni" of which she is a memeber. Her caring extends to Elsa, (Cher) who helps, without thanks, the ladies' group, who are not completely sympathetic to her. Her technique and sensitivity in this role is unmatched.
