One of those very rare gems in cinematography: the Director has something very serious to say and he says it in a most beautiful and most poetic manner. Five out of five stars in my judgement.

It`s a gripping epic story, but they didn`t, in my opinion, do a good job of indicating that long time periods had passed. This was confounded by the fact that the same actresses played different generations of women. After Maria the mother dies, Aurea and her daughter Maria are alone. Then in another scene, there`s the mother, Maria, again! Whoa! How did she get back? It turns out that that`s the same actress, but this time she`s supposed to be depicting an older Aurea. Then there`s the younger Aurea again, and I`m wondering how she got young again, but it`s the younger actress, this time depicting the daughter Maria as a young adult.

House of Sand is a beautiful movie. Pure poetry on screen. Andrucha Waddington is brilliant, Ricardo della Rosa (director of photography) does an outstanding job, and so does the art director Tulé Peake (City of God). The cast... well... I believe Fernanda Montenegro deserves an Oscar for every single movie she has ever made. Fernanda Torres (who plays Maria) is also an incredible actress and also deserves international recognition and appreciation. Both of them are much more intense and genuine than this new wave of insipid-famous-award-winning-botox-frozen-faced actresses we see everyday in the tabloids. I loved this movie but I`m afraid it
