Eight years after illegally entering Belgium with her son Ivan, Tania, a Russian, lives in fear of being deported. Thanks to help from Nowak, a mobster who gives her lodging and false papers, she manages to evade authorities. On Ivan's 13th birthday, when she's arrested in his presence, the boy manages to escape and take refuge with a friend. Confined in a detention center, Tania meets other "illegals," including Aissa, an African who has been severely beaten. On Aissa's advice, the young Russian refuses to reveal her name, nationality or her status as a mother, despite intensified pressure from authorities. Meanwhile, her greatest fear is that Ivan will be drawn into Nowak's shady dealings.
