Steve McQueen Biography

Date of Birth: October 9, 1969

Born in London, England, director Steve McQueen trained as a fine artist at Chelsea School of Art in London, Goldsmith's College in London and Tisch School of the Arts at New York University in New York City.

He began his directing career with short films, many of which received critical notice and in 2008, released his first feature film, Hunger, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. There, McQueen became the first British director to win the MCaméra d'Or Award, which goes to a first time director. The film went on to win several more awards at international film festivals.

His next feature film, Shame, about a man with sexual addiction, starred Michael Fassbender (who'd also appeared in Hunger and would go on to star in his next film). It won Best Film at the Venice Film Festival. But it was McQueen's third film, 12 Years a Slave, that has earned the most accolades to date for the director. Based on the true story of a free black man who was sold into slavery for 12 years, it has won over 100 awards including a Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture - Drama. It is nominated for nine Academy Awards, including Best Achievement in Directing and Best Motion Picture.

McQueen lives in Amsterdam with his girlfriend Bianca and their daughter Alex and son Dexter. He also has a home in London.
