NIELS MUELLER

Date of Birth: c. 1961

Born and raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Niels Mueller was studying at Tufts University when he met Gary Winnick. Mueller was writing stories that he wanted to turn into short films, and he asked Winnick to act in one. Winnick caught the bug and together, the two 18-year-old students began co-directing a college TV series. After receiving his bachelor's degree from Tufts, Mueller went to UCLA Film School, where he earned his Masters.

Later, Winnick asked Mueller to help him with an indie film called Tadpole (2002), starring Sigourney Weaver. Directed by Winnick and co-written by Mueller, the film won critical acclaim and launched both their careers. Mueller went on to make his feature directorial debut with a screenplay he co-wrote, The Assassination of Richard Nixon (2005). Based on the true story of Sam Bicke, the film stars Sean Penn, who received a Best Actor nomination for his role at the 2005 Golden Satellite Awards.

Mueller is currently working on another screenplay, this time an ensemble comedy set in his Wisconsin hometown.
