Revisiting some childhood home videos, Madison's (Annabelle Wallis) adoptive mother discusses why Madison had an imaginary friend named Gabriel. Director and writer James Wan then cuts in to give a quick word about his aims with this movie as clips from the film play in the background, highlighting Wan's visual storytelling. As an entity haunts Madison, those around her do their best to learn the truth, only to be attacked by him as his strength continues to grow.
