Ailey

Legendary dancer, choreographer, and storyteller Alvin Ailey overcame fierce obstacles to become a household name in contemporary dance circles. From humble beginnings during the Great Depression to starting the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in New York, Ailey created a haven for Black artists on stage, starting his own cultural crusade to amplify black stories and voices. Now a pinnacle of modern dance, Ailey is recalled by friends, family and students as an entertainer, trailblazer, and protester for Black liberation on and off the stage.
