As Clem Hoately (Willem Dafoe) tells audiences about a mysterious creature at the carnival, Stanton "Stat" Carlisle (Bradley Cooper) arrives by bus in town to join the show. A master manipulator, Stan looks to improve his act when he hooks up with Lilith Ritter (Cate Blanchett), but she might turn out to be more than he can handle as danger and destruction befall him.
