Joanna Rakoff (Margaret Qualley) moves to New York City to write, but to pay her way, takes a job as an assistant at a literary agency that represents J.D. Salinger. Her boss (Sigourney Weaver) believes computers make more work for everyone, so Joanna has to work on a typewriter. She also has to read all of Salinger's fan mail because he doesn't want to see them himself.
