A grandmother (Glenn Close) tells her grandson J.D. (Owen Asztalos) that he has to decide whether he wants to be somebody or not. His mother Bev (Amy Adams) has serious issues that make his childhood especially difficult, so his grandmother, known as Mawmaw, tries to make things better for J.D. so he can go out into the world and have a chance at a successful life.
