A really odd bird, this one. Gangster film where the characters are played by children, and the guns shoot ice cream. Add to that musical interludes with songs by Paul Williams and it adds up to one of the most unconventional "mainstream" movies ever. This is one of those "concept movies" where the concept is all there is, and nothing more. Yet the potential viewers of this film, who no doubt seek this out for its specifics and strangeness, will find different types of specifics and strangeness to enjoy here. Psychotherapists would have a field day with this one. A film that infantilizes (and bowdlerizes) a violent genre, the very nature of this British-made film seems to prefigure the video nasty hysteria that was manufactured there just a few years later. Director Alan Parker seems to have a less than sure hand with this, his first feature. The staging and editing are often jagged, and the performances by the child actors are mostly bad. Worth seeing for young Jodie Foster, especially when she gets creamed in the face. Check it out if you're curious.
