Joel M. Reed's notorious shocker is a big sick joke, but a pretty good one if you've got a really dark sense of humor. This is a spoof, with some real meta-cleverness; but most audiences will be overwhelmed by the grimy mis-en-scene and outrageous violence to appreciate Reed's achievement here. A number of critics have compared this to H.G. Lewis's splatter films but I think this has much more in common with the work of John Waters. An exploitation milestone. Much more vital and intelligent (not to mention intelligible) than pretty much any film in the NY underground. A must for adventurous and open minded filmgoers.
