Born in Torrance, California to a single mother, Stephanie Hsu moved to New York City after graduating from high school to study at NYU Tisch School of the Arts, graduating in 2012.

She played a number of roles in short films, TV series and indie films before landing a regular role as Joy Armstrong on the Hulu series The Path in 2016. The show enjoyed three seasons and after it ended, Stephanie made her Broadway debut in The SpongeBob Musical in 2017, playing Karen, the anthropomorphic computer.

Back on TV, she joined the cast of the hit Prime Video series The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel during its third season, playing Mei Lin, the new girlfriend of Midge Maisel's ex-husband, Joel.

In 2021 Stephanie played Soo in the blockbuster Marvel movie, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, then was cast as Joy Wang, the lesbian daughter of Michelle Yeoh's character in the sci-fi comedy Everything Everywhere All At Once (2022). Stephanie received her first nomination for an Oscar for her role in the Supporting Actress category.

In July of 2023, Stephanie starred in the movie Joy Ride, alongside Ashley Park, Sherry Cola, and Sabrina Wu. The film follows four unlikely friends who embark on a one-in-a-lifetime international adventure. After a business trip gone sideways, the four girls must figure out a way to find their friend's birth mother, get back to America, and find themselves along the way.
