MARLEEN GORRIS

After studying English at the University of Groningen and drama at University of Amsterdam, Gorris continued her studies in the University of Birmingham. There she achieved her M.A. in drama.

She began to work on filmmaking in the early '80s -- writing and directing her first film, A Question of Silence. It received honors from the Utrecht Film Festival in Holland, the Women's Film Festival in France and the Festival of Taormina in Sicily.

After more successful films in the various European festivals, she garnered her first Oscar award for Best Foreign Film, for her feature Antonia. This film (which she both wrote and directed) also won awards for her and her crew at the Toronto Film Festival and the Utrecht Film Festival, and was nominated for a BAFTA award in 1997.
