DAVID SOREN

Date of Birth: April 19, 1973

Born in Toronto, David Soren grew up in Hamilton until junior high and then moved back to Toronto, where he attended high school. David enjoyed drawing from a young age and by the time he was eight, he'd decided he wanted to move to California and work in animated films. In pursuit of his passion, he was accepted out of thousands of applicants into the animation program at Sheridan College in Oakville. While there, he made the animated short film Mr. Lucky, which was accepted into competition at the 1997 Academy Awards. It also received many accolades at various film festivals. Upon graduation from the three-year program, David was recruited by DreamWorks Animation.

The Canadian director, writer, voice actor and storyboard artist has worked on a number of well-known projects as a story artist, including Chicken Run and Shrek, and he was the head of story on Shark Tale. David directed and wrote his first film in 2009—a TV Christmas special Merry Madagascar, followed by a 2013 TV Valentine’s Day special, Madly Madagascar. He made his major motion picture directorial debut with the animated feature film Turbo, which is based on David’s own original concept and features the voices of Ryan Reynolds, Paul Giamatti and Samuel L. Jackson.

His latest directorial effort is the animated comedy Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie (2017) with the voices of Kevin Hart and Jordan Peele.

David lives in California with his wife and their two children.
