DANIEL MACIVOR

Date of Birth: July 23, 1962

Born in Sydney, Nova Scotia, Daniel MacIvor studied at Dalhousie University in Halifax and Toronto's George Brown College. In 1986, he co-founded touring theater company da da kamera, not only acting in and writing many of their plays but serving as Artistic Director. He made both his film and television debuts in 1987, in the film Night Friend and making a guest appearance on the popular CBC series Street Legal. He once said that he primarily thinks of himself as an actor, and though he has appeared in several Canadian film productions, in 1993, he directed his first short film.

He continued to direct shorts as well as stage productions, and has been writer in residence at Buddies in Bad Times, Tarragon Theatre and The National Theatre School. For his work in Toronto-based theater, he has won two Dora Mavor Moore Awards. In 1998, he starred alongside Callum Keith Rennie, Don McKellar and Molly Parker in the offbeat CBC comedy series Twitch City that ran for 14 episodes.

MacIvor's feature film directorial/screenwriting debut was Past Perfect (2002), starring himself and Rebecca Jenkins. The film won Special Mention in 2003 at the Mar del Plata Film Festival and MacIvor received Best Actor award at the Atlantic Film Festival. He received a 2004 Genie award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay for Marion Bridge (2002), based on his play of the same name.

Many of the top names in Canadian show business signed on when he decided to direct a second feature, Wilby Wonderful (2004), which he also wrote. Paul Gross, Jenkins and Rennie are just a few of the stars who play roles in the dark comedy about the wacky inhabitants of a small town.

With da da kamera, MacIvor received a GLADD Award from the American Gay and Lesbian Anti-Defamation League and an Obie award for the New York production of his play In On It. He resides in Toronto.
