The son of soap-opera star Jeanne Cooper and producer Harry Bernsen, Bernsen is perhaps best known for his work in the smash hit television series, L.A. Law, which earned him two Emmy and Golden Globe nominations each.

He began his career playing small roles while he was still in college. Moving to New York in 1981, Bernsen supported himself doing carpentry, and modelling for a cigarette company before joining the daytime serial Ryans Hope.
