Reverend Frank Shore (Harris) is struggling with his faith when he's sent to Chicago to investigate the miracles performed by a woman who has been nominated for sainthood. While digging into O'Regan's life and the miracles she is supposed to have performed, he meets Maria (Scorsone), a teenage girl who was supposedly healed by O'Regan. He also meets Roxane (Heche), O'Regan's daughter, who was abandoned by her mother, wants nothing to do with her story, and has given up her belief in God. During his investigation, the priest, who is experiencing a crisis of faith, re-discovers his own purpose in life. Things become complicated when he becomes romantically involved with Roxanne.
