In the trailer for Valley Girl, when her daughter comes home after breaking up with her boyfriend, Julie (Alicia Silverstone) tells her about her own rocky love life as a teenager at Sherman Oaks High School during the 1980s. When wealthy Julie fell in love with Randy (Josh Whitehouse), a boy from a poor family, her  parents and friends were all against the relationship, which caused her to doubt whether or not she should be with him.
