In 1975, Claude Lanzmann meets Benjamin Murmelstein in Rome. In 1944, Benjamin held the controversial post of president of the Jewish Council of the Theresienstadt concentration camp, which was portrayed by the Nazis as a “model ghetto” to show how well they were treating Jews. It was supposedly a seaside resort, but was in fact a brutal camp where thousands of Jews were killed and where others died from malnutrition and disease. In 2012, the 87-year-old filmmaker makes a pilgrimage to this infamous place.
