In the first official trailer for the horror movie Lights Out, a woman enters a room and switches the light on and off several times. A little boy says that everytime he turns off the lights, there's a woman waiting in the shadows. He's not the only one who sees her. As it turns out, several people are being haunted by the spirit. Then a woman tells the boy she had a childhood friend named Diana to whom something very bad happened. We're left to assume the spirit is Diana, and Diana knows that everyone is afraid of the dark, and she feeds on that. The police are called in to investigate, but even they are prey to the vindictive spirit.
