When I read the book I felt that the character of Sam was the true heart and soul of the story. Sean Astin did an amazing job in capturing the pure sweetness and humanity of that character. In a film full of battles, of otherworldly creatures, of special effects, Astin`s performance stands out as completely and fully real. Astin deserves, not just a nomination but an award for pulling off one of the most difficult and complex roles in literary history. Awesome movie with a brilliant performance.
