5 star film if you love anime. If you are not much on Japanese anime I would rate it as a 4. I saw this film some twenty years ago and it was my introduction to Japanese anime and an important introduction between it and cartoons. I discovered unlike cartoons, anime often tackles serious and complex story lines and adult themes. This film is not for children as there are rather dark themes of death and loss as the film is set in the closing months of WW2 in Japan. The story involves a brother and sister caught in the ongoing bombing of Japan when the Japanese government refuses to surrender preferring to allow total destruction of Japan then admit defeat in their war of aggression in the pacific. Caught in middle of this hellish plight the older brother does all that he can to protect and to hold onto the one thing he has left in this world which is his younger sister. This film is fine for children over the age of 11 to see and is considered a classic. This film belongs in the genre of anti-war films such as Das Boot as it makes clear the untold suffering of those caught in war and the horrendous levels of personal loss. -Jim Koch-
