Directed with gritty integrity by prolific action-specialist Jesse V. Johnson (Triple Threat, The Debt Collector, Savage Dog, Accident Man), Avengement finds the filmmaker reuniting with star/human-ass-kicker Scott Adkins for the sixth time, with results that are more refined than might be expected. Yes - there's lots of bloody beat-downs and shoot-outs all throughout the lean and mean 90 minute narrative co-written by Johnson and Stu Small - but it's the solid plotting that keeps this programmer feeling alive and fresh. This is a down and dirty revenge movie bolstered by a strong emotional undercurrent that allows the viewer to become fully invested; Adkins also delivers what's likely the best performance of his career (or at least that I've seen), truly bringing the audience into the fold and along for the brutal, smash-your-face-and-shank-you-in-the-ribs ride. Cinematographer Jonathan Hall knows precisely how to frame the nastily choreographed mayhem, always allowing for visual frame of reference. And because the action is in service of the story, and not the other way around, everything has more weight than you might expect for B-movie entertainment such as this. Sean Murray's unexpectedly flavorful musical score repeatedly hits some terrific sonic notes. Avengement is currently streaming on Netflix and very much worth a viewing, especially for fans of the genre. My guess is that Johnson will get the big-budget phone call from Hollywood very soon.

Absolutely stunning, visceral British action drama, incredible performances and incredible cinematography. The Prison fight scenes are incredible. The rave reviews from the Los Angeles Times and Hollywood Reporter are well deserved.

Cheap British crime drama: need subtitles because low class brits can't speak English. Shot on one crummy set, with a couple standard stock outside shots, and that's it. Put together in 1 day by Mrs. Johnson's 4th grade drama class with an assist by the make-up dept.
