THOMAS MCCARTHY

Date of Birth: January 30, 1969

Thomas McCarthy studied acting at the Yale School of Drama. He amassed an extensive list of stage credits, including Noises Off on Broadway and regional productions of Hamlet and Taming of the Shrew, as well as a production of La Ronde, directed by Joanne Woodward.

He made his screen debut with a small role in the teenage drama Crossing the Bridge (1992), followed by another small role in the indie drama Rift (1995). He landed the lead role of Tim in the Hallmark Hall of Fame TV movie Mary and Tim (1996), co-starring Candice Bergen. Other television credits include playing the regular role of Kevin Riley on the Fox TV series Boston Public as well as guest appearances on Ally McBeal, The Practice, Law & Order and Spin City. Feature film credits include The Guru (2002) and Meet the Parents (2000).

McCarthy began writing plays and co-wrote The Killing Field, which was produced off-off-Broadway in the mid-1990s. One of the actors he cast was Peter Dinklage and they became friends. Tom kept him in mind when writing his first feature screenplay, The Station Agent, and cast him in the movie, along with another actor he'd met while doing a play, Bobby Canavale. The Station Agent (2003) marked McCarthy's feature film directorial debut and garnered the Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival as well as a BAFTA Film Award for Best Screenplay - Original.

In 2009, he won Best Director at the Independent Spirit Awards for his second film, The Visitor (2007). In 2011, his third film, Win Win, won the Humanitas Prize at Sundance. Most recently McCarthy directed The Cobbler, starring Adam Sandler, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival.
