Born in Yorkshire, England, Sophie made her professional acting debut at the age of 12, when she was cast in a British stage production of the musical The Goodbye Girl, playing the role of Lucy. She followed that up by playing the title role in a 1988 touring production of the musical Annie.

Sophie went on to college at Brunel University where she finished with a degree in modern drama. Sophie landed her first television role in 2007 on the series Emmerdale, and after guest appearances on other shows, she secured a regular starring role on the series Waterloo Road from 2009 to 2010. In 2010 she landed a role as young scullery maid Daisy on the Masterpiece Theatre PBS series Downton Abbey. The show went on to win many awards over the course of six seasons, and Sophie shared three Screen Actor Guild nominations with the rest of the cast in 2013, 2015 and 2016 for "Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series." She also appeared as Bryony West in the series The Job Lot from 2013 to 2014.

Sophie has made the leap to the big screen, playing Ella's wicked stepsister Drisella in Disney's live action remake of Cinderella (2015).

She traveled to Canada to film a role as Ann Ryand on the popular CBC series, Murdoch Mysteries in 2018, and in 2019, appeared in two feature films. She reprised her role as Daisy in the big screen sequel Downton Abbey (2019), and played Mrs. Crupp in The Personal History of David Copperfield alongside Dev Patel, which screened at the Toronto International Film Festival.

When she has a break from screen work, Sophie still works on stage, most recently in 2011 in Jez Butterworth's hit play Jerusalem at the Apollo Theatre in London's West End.

Sophie also had a candy company, called ThatSweetFeeling, that she set up with a past boyfriend, but sold it when she no longer had time to run it.
