SAFFRON BURROWS

Date of Birth: October 21, 1972

Born and raised in London, England, Saffron Burrows dreamed of being an actress and began studying drama at a young age. At the age of 15, she was discovered by a modeling scout in Covent Garden and went on to model for companies such as Chanel, Yves-Saint Laurent and Vivienne Westwood.

At 20, she made her big screen debut with a small role in the movie In the Name of the Father (1993). A bigger role followed in Circle of Friends (1995), starring Minnie Driver. Saffron's first starring role was in the Australian film, Hotel de Love (1996). In 2000, she was nominated for a Blockbuster Entertainment Award as Favorite Actress - Newcomer for Deep Blue Sea (1999).

More films followed, including Time Code (2000), Frida (2002), Troy (2004) and Reign Over Me (2007), but it wasn't until she joined the cast of Boston Legal in 2007 that Saffron's face became familiar to American audiences.

She stayed with the show for a year, then returned to the big screen with roles in films such as The Bank Job (2008) co-starring Jason Statham and Love and Virtue (2008), starring alongside John Malkovich, Peter O'Toole and Michael Madsen and the indie film Knife Fight (2012) alongside Rob Lowe.

In the years that followed, Saffron worked almost exclusively on television. Her two biggest projects were ABC's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. from 2013 to 2014, in which she played the role of Victoria Hand in a handful of episodes—as well as Amazon Prime's award-winning musical comedy drama Mozart in the Jungle (2014 to 2018), playing Cynthia Taylor in the vast majority of episodes, alongside Gael Garcia Bernal and Lola Kirke.

At one time Saffron dated actor Alan Cumming, who is now openly gay—as is Saffron. She came in at No. 90 in the Independent on Sunday [UK] 2006 Pink List—a list of the most influential gay men and women.

Although she was once romantically linked to actress Fiona Shaw after they played lovers in the National Theatre's production of The Powerbook, she married Alison Balian in 2011 after they dated for three years. Saffron has given birth to two children—a son (b. 2010) and a daughter (b. 2017).

In addition to English, Saffron speaks French and Spanish.
