Roger Allam Biography


Date of Birth: October 26, 1953

Born in London, England, Roger Allam was so impressed after viewing the play Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead that he decided he wanted to be part of the acting community. The young man joined The Royal Shakespeare Company in 1981 and has appeared in productions with them off and on ever since.

Allam has had a very successful stage career, with starring roles in productions of Money, Summerfolk, Democracy, Privates on Parade and Les Miserables. He was nominated four times for Laurence Oliver Theatre Awards and won twice. He has also had roles in many popular British television shows and BBC radio theatre productions.

Allam made his film debut in director Michael Winterbottom's Tristram Shandy: A Cock and Bull Story (2005). He has since appeared in V for Vendetta, Ken Loach's 2006 Palme D'Or winner The Wind That Shakes the Barley (2006) and The Queen (2006) opposite Academy Award winner Helen Mirren.

Allam can also be seen in the Wachowski brothers' live-action big screen adaptation of the animated television series Speed Racer and Stephen Frears' Tamara Drewe, which screened at the 2010 Toronto International Film Festival. In 2012 he appeared in Margaret Thatcher biography The Iron Lady in which he played the role of Gordon Reece. More recently, Allam starred in The Angels' Share.
