Noah Baumbach was born in Brooklyn, New York, and grew up in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Park Slope. He graduated from Vassar College with a BA in English. While obtaining his degree, he met fellow filmmaker Jason Blum, who would later produce his work.

In 1995 he made his debut at the New York Film Festival with Kicking and Screaming (1995), which he both wrote and directed. In addition, he co-wrote The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004) with Wes Anderson. The following year, he released The Squid and the Whale (2005), a semi-autobiographical feature film about his childhood in Brooklyn starring Jeff Daniels and Laura Linney. The film went on to win both the Directing Award and the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award at Sundance Film Festival and was nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.

He directed Frances Ha (2012), which he co-wrote with the film's star, Greta Gerwig. He also wrote and directed While We’re Young (2014) starring Ben Stiller, Naomi Watts, Adam Driver, and Amanda Seyfried, as well as The Meyerowitz Stories (2017), starring Dustin Hoffman, Ben Stiller, Adam Sandler, and Emma Thompson.

Baumbach produced, wrote, and directed Marriage Story (2019). The film, which received six Academy Award nominations, stars Scarlett Johansson, Adam Driver,  Ray Liotta and Laura Dern, who won an Oscar for her performance.

Baumbach co-wrote Barbie (2023) and is in production for the Netflix original film White Noise, which began filming in 2021.

Baumbach has one son from his first marriage to Jennifer Jason Leigh. He is currently in a relationship with creative collaborator Greta Gerwig. The pair announced they had a son together in 2019.
