MICHAEL LEHMANN

Date of Birth: March 30, 1957

Hailing from San Francisco, Lehmann studied art at the University of California at Berkeley and went on to receive a degree in philosophy from Columbia University. He started to work at Zeotrope Studios with Francis Ford Coppola, where he supervised experimental video systems used in a number of feature films. Inspired by the movie-making magic around him, he returned to school to study filmmaking at the University of Southern California, where he received his degree in 1985.

During his studies at USC, he completed a short film entitled Beaver Gets a Boner, and a short for Saturday Night Live - "Ed's Secret Life." The work came to the attention of the Hollywood film community and led him to a development deal at New World Pictures.

In 1989, he received his first chance to direct a feature film, and took on the black comedy, Heathers. The film not only found a mainstream success, it developed a cult following. He next filmed his first (and only) screenplay, Meet the Applegates (1990).

He went on to direct numerous popular films including Airheads and The Truth About Cats and Dogs, as well as directing a number of television episodes including The Larry Sanders Show, Homicide: Life on the Streets and The West Wing.

When not on set, Lehmann resides in Southern California with his wife, Holland, and two kids.
