MARTON CSOKAS

Date of Birth: June 30, 1966

Born in New Zealand but of Hungarian descent, Marton Csokas has been acting professionally since 1989. A graduate of the New Zealand Drama School, Marton has an impressive list of stage credentials including Julius Caesar, A Clockwork Orange and Twelfth Night. He also co-founded the Stronghold Theatre in Australasia, and has written and performed regularly with them over the years.

Marton's first film role was in Jack Brown Genius (1994), which led to work on a New Zealand soap opera called Shortland Street. In 1996 he appeared in the film Broken English and kicked off a long relationship with Pacific Renaissance Pictures, the production company that made Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, Xena: Warrior Princess and Cleopatra 2525 among others. He has appeared as various characters on all of these TV shows, as well as roles on Farscape, BeastMaster and The Lost World.

Marton's film and television credits include The Monkey's Mask (2000), Rain (2001), Halifax f.p.: Swimming with Sharks and the acclaimed mini-series The Farm. He has appeared in several big budget Hollywood films including Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones (2002), XXX (2002), Kangaroo Jack (2003) and Timeline (2003) (based on the Michael Crichton novel) but his portrayal of the elf Celeborn, proud King of Lothlorien in Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings trilogy, has brought him the most notoriety to date.

He played the role of Jack Barts in the 2012 horror film Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. More recently, he starred in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014), The Equalizer (2014), the TV series Into the Badlands, Loving (2016), Burn Your Maps (2016) and Mark Felt: The Man Who Brought Down the White House (2017).

Marton played Francis Carver in the BBC Two 2020 TV mini-series The Luminaries, set in New Zealand, alongside Himesh Patel and Eva Green.

In the mid-2000s, Marton was involved in a long distance relationship with Eva Green, whom he met on the set of Kingdom of Heaven (2005). Though he moved to London in 2008 to be with her, they split in 2009. He currently divides his time between Los Angeles and New Zealand.
