MARTIN CAMPBELL

Date of Birth: October 24, 1940

Born in New Zealand, Campbell moved to England in 1966 to pursue his career as a cinematographer. He graduated from cameraman to line producer for a film called Scum, then moved on to producer for Black Joy, a film shown at the Cannes Film Festival.

Campbell debuted as a director with an action series for British television called The Professionals and followed it with the television series Shoestring and the BBC's Edge of Darkness, for which he won a BAFTA TV Award for Best Drama Series. He moved to the United States and won a Mystfest award for Best Film for the feature Criminal Law (1988), starring Kevin Bacon and Gary Oldman. Then came Defenseless (1991) with Barbara Hershey and Sam Shepard. Campbell also directed Ray Liota in No Escape (1994), Pierce Brosnan as James Bond in GoldenEye (1995) and Angelina Jolie in Beyond Borders (2003).

Other television directing experience includes two episodes of Homicide for NBC and the HBO TV movie Cast a Deadly Spell.

Campbell is married to actress Sol E. Romero.
