LEE HIRSCH

Date of Birth: 1972

Director, producer, writer and documentary filmmaker, Lee Hirsch was born and raised in Long Island, New York. He attended Hampshire College in Amherst, Massachusetts and then went on to study at the New York Film Academy.

Lee is the founder, director and producer of The Local Voices for Obama project, which is a series of ads featuring Obama supporters. The series won Best Presidential Ad and Best Independent Expenditure at the 2009 Reed Awards.

The successful 2002 documentary Amandla! A Revolution in Four Part Harmony was also directed, produced and written by Hirsch. The film, which is about the history of South African musical heroes, went on to win several awards, including the 2012 Gold Hugo award for best documentary at the Chicago International Film Festival, a 2004 News & Documentary Emmy for Outstanding Individual Achievement in a Craft: Research, and the Best of Festival Award at the 2003 Telluride Mountainfilm Festival.

Hirsch gained attention for his documentary Bully, which he directed, produced and wrote. This notable documentary is about bullying in schools across America and has gone on to win Best Picture at the 2011 Hamptons International Film Festival, as well as both the Best Film and Audience Award at the 2011 Bergen International Film Festival.
