KERRY CONRAN

Date of Birth: 1966

Although many directors get their start by making a low budget film and shopping it around film festivals in order to get a distribution deal, Kerry Conran knew that route wasn't for him. After studying film at California Arts, where he was exposed to 2-D animation, he worked with technology viable for filmmaking, using blue screen taken to an extreme conclusion. Four years later, in 1998, he'd completed a six-minute short film on his computer and showed it to Jon Avenet, who'd produced films such as George of the Jungle (1997), the Mighty Ducks movies and directed and produced Fried Green Tomatoes (1991).

Avenet was impressed by what he saw and signed on as producer, helping Conran get wide release for his first film. Conran wrote and directed Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (2004), a sci-fi action thriller starring Jude Law, Angelina Jolie and Gwyneth Paltrow. In total, it took ten years to bring the film to fruition.

Conran is currently working on the sci-fi film, A Princess of Mars (2006), based on the story by Edgar Rice Burroughs.
