JAMES PUREFOY

Date of Birth: June 3, 1964

Hailing from a farm in Somerset, England, Purefoy was one of four children and attended boarding school for three years before venturing off to London to complete a BA program at the Central School of Speech and Drama. He was discovered in his final year performing in Henry V, and soon after graduating he joined the prestigious Royal Shakespeare Company.

Purefoy continued to work on stage until 1990 on productions like Macbeth, Constant Couple, and The Tempest. His screen credits began on the small screen in the series, The Casebook of Sherlock Holmes, followed by the telefilm, The Cloning of Joanna May playing Oliver.

He continued to play small roles in film and television until 1996 when he landed the starring role as the caring landlord, Mr. Lawrence, in the mini-series adaptation of Anne Brontë, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall. He continued to receive major roles in mini-series like The Tide of Life and A Dance to the Music of Time.

Purefoy made heads turn in 1999 with his enchanting portrayal of the caring brother in the feature film Mansfield Park, based on the works of Jane Austen. With the major exposure, he continued to work in feature films like Maybe Baby (2000), A Knight's Tale (2001) playing both Sir Thomas Colville and Edward the Black Prince of Wales, Resident Evil (2002) and Vanity Fair (2004). Recently, he starred in the action fantasy film John Carter (2012) alongside Taylor Kitsch and Willem Dafoe, and Equity (2016) with Anna Gunn.

Purefoy currently lives with wife, British actress, Holly Aird and their son, Joseph, in London.
