The following year he directed and wrote his first feature, Twist, which was a modern retelling of Charles Dickens' novel, Oliver Twist, with the main character a gay hustler in modern-day Toronto. It was nominated for four Genie awards, including one for Best Adapted Screenplay. In 2005, Jacob joined the cast for several episodes of The Movie Network series Slings and Arrows, starring Paul Gross and his wife Martha Burns.

When not acting, Jacob was hard at work on his next film, The Trotsky, which he directed and wrote. Starring his longtime friend and fellow Montreal born actor, Jay Baruchel, the film enjoyed much success, including Audience Awards at the 2009 Atlantic Film Festival and the 2009 Tokyo International film Festival. It also won two Genies, including one for Best Original Screenplay.
