This actress from across the pond solidified her career in one of films' most celebrated and sought after roles in a movie franchise.

Gemma Arterton was born in Gravesend, Kent, England. She grew up with her mother, Sally, and younger sister, Hannah Jane. After attending Gravesend Grammar School for Girls, Arterton took performance arts courses at the Miskin Theatre in Dartford, where she won the Advanced National Diploma in Acting. Not long after she was given the chance to train at the Academy of Dramatic Art on a full scholarship. There Arterton performed in more than 10 plays, and developed a range of dancing skills including Flamenco, Polka and the Waltz. She was also awarded a BASSC certificate in Stage Combat.

Arterton made her professional stage debut in a Broadway play of Shakespeare's Love's Labour's Lost at The Globe Theatre in London. Her career then transitioned from the stage to the big screen with her first feature film in 2007, as Kelly Jones—a head girl at a high school for bad teenage girls—in St. Trinian's, beating out popular Brit Sienna Miller. For her work in the film, she was nominated for an Empire Award as "Best Newcomer." She went on to win the award the following year. On television she played the title role in the BBC mini-series Tess of the D'Urbervilles, establishing herself as an actress who could do serious roles, in addition to comedy. Arterton would then go on to get the role of a lifetime as the latest Bond Girl in the 22nd installment of the James Bond films, The Quantum of Solace. This iconic role helped launch the talented Brit's career, making her name known around the world. She followed this breakout role up with Runner Runner(2013) alongside Justin Timberlake and Ben Affleck.

Arterton has continued to work non stop, with starring roles in major motion pictures such as Pirate Radio, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, the action adventure Clash of the Titans and Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters. Most recently, she starred in the fantasy drama The History of Love (2016), the thriller 100 Streets (2016) alongside Idris Elba, the horror thriller The Girl with All the Gifts (2017), and the period dramedy Their Finest (2017).
