Eric Brevig Biography

Date of Birth: c. 1957

While you might only know the name Erik Brevig if you stick around for the movie credits, this talented special effects veteran is well known in Hollywood for his technical skills and visionary know-how.

Brevig has spent 20 years in Hollywood behind the scenes as second-unit director and visual-effects coordinator. He has worked with directing greats from James Cameron to M. Night Shyamalan, working on Special FX and stunts for blockbuster hits like Men in Black, Pearl Harbor and The Day After Tomorrow. His work has garnered him two visual effects Oscar nominations, as well as a shared special achievement Oscar for his work on Total Recall.

As a child, Brevig developed an interest in fantasy films and was fascinated by seeing things on screen that he knew were impossible. With a desire to know how those effects were created, Brevig went to film school and started making his own films. Through trial and error, he taught himself how to create visual effects.

After completing film school, Brevig was hired by Disney as an intern where he produced a show for the theme park called Magic Journeys, packing it full of special effects. Disney executives took notice and Brevig was promoted to effects supervisor. He has been working in the industry ever since, with over 30 big budget hits to his name.

Brevig decided to take the plunge into the director's chair for his directorial debut of the groundbreaking Journey to the Center of the Earth (2008). The film is the first full 3D live action film and has received positive buzz from critics and audiences alike. Brevig is sifting through several script offers for his next directing project.
