Elizabeth Claire Ellie Kemper is an American actress, comedian and writer. She has four siblings, including her older sister Carrie, who is a television writer.

Ellie attended John Burroughs High School, where her drama teacher was Mad Men star, Jon Hamm. She later attended Princeton, where she played field hockey in her freshman year before quitting to concentrate on performing. She was also part of the improve comedy group Quipfire! and the musical theatre troupe the Princeton Triangle Club. While at Princeton, she studied English where she graduated with a B.A. in 2002 and went on to study English for a year at Oxford.

Ellie first received attention with her one-woman show Feeling Mad/Sad with Ellie Kemper. She had previously auditioned for the sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live, but was not cast. In 2009, Ellie received a callback to audition for The Office and began her role as Erin Hannon for the show’s fifth season. By the sixth season, she was signed as a regular.

She has also appeared on the big screen in Bridesmaids, 21 Jump Street, Get Him to the Greek, Sex Tape, Laggies and Somewhere.

Ellie then lent her voice to the role of Katie in the animated feature The Secret Life of Pets (2016) and reprised the role in the sequel, The Secret Life of Pets 2 (2019). However, she is probably best known for her role as Kimmy Schmidt on the Netflix comedy TV series Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt created by Tina Fey and Robert Carlock, which ran from 2015-2019.

On July 7, 2012, Ellie married Michael Koman. Ellie divides her time between Los Angeles and New York.
