DUNCAN JONES

Date of Birth: May 30, 1971

Duncan Zowie Hayward Jones was born in London, England to rock star David Bowie (full legal name: David Robert Jones) and his first wife, actress Angela Bowie. As a child, Duncan was known as Zowie Bowie. His parents were divorced in 1980 when Duncan was nine. His father was granted custody and Duncan was sent to boarding school in Scotland, visiting his mother on school vacations. At 12, he decided he wanted to be called Joey, shortening it to Joe in his early teens. He reverted to his birth name, Duncan Jones, in his late teens.

In 1995, Duncan earned a bachelor's degree in philosophy from the College of Wooster in Ohio, then studied at London Film School. He made his film writing and directing debut with the short film Whistle, which screened at the Brest European Short Film Festival in 2002. In 2009 he made his feature film screenwriting/directing debut with Moon, which gained him a BAFTA for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer in 2010. Starring Sam Rockwell and Kevin Spacey, Moon has gone on to win numerous other awards including two BIFAs and the Michael Powell Award at the 2009 Edinburgh International Film Festival.

Duncan has gone on to direct his second feature film, the Summit Entertainment action thriller Source Code (2011) starring Jake Gyllenhaal.
