Charles Shyer

CHARLES SHYER

Date of Birth: October 11, 1941

The son of a man who was one of the founders of the Director's Guild of America, Shyer spent his youth in Los Angeles. After completing his degree at UCLA, he worked briefly as an assistant director and a production manager before becoming a writer.

After a number of years, Shyer was promoted to head writer for the hit comedy series, The Odd Couple. Other sitcoms like Getting Together and Happy Days were soon to follow.

In 1977 he made his first feature film debut co-writing the hit comedy, Smokey and the Bandit. A few years later he met his future wife, Nancy Meyers and the two co-wrote his second (and her first) mega-hit, Private Benjamin (1980). The two were married the year it was released, and continued working together, making many more hit comedy films including Shyer's first directing gig, Irreconcilable Differences (1984), Baby Boom (1987), Father of the Bride (1991) (and its sequel) and The Parent Trap (1998).

Shyer and Meyers had two daughters during their marriage, which ended in separation in 1999.
