Richard Serra: Thinking on Your Feet

Centered on the creation of a sculpture called The Matter of Time that was commissioned by the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, director Maria Anna Tappeiner's documentary portrait of American sculptor Richard Serra provides the viewer with the rare opportunity to witness the creative process in action. From the first seeds of inspiration to the installation in Bilbao in May of 2005, Tappeiner's film follows the project as it begins to push the boundaries of what's considered feasible in terms of size, form, and technology. But Tappeiner does more than just follow the piece commissioned for Bilbao as it's carried from concept to reality, she also seeks to draw parallels between The Matter of Time and the artist's previous works, in addition to allowing Serra the opportunity to weigh in with his own opinions. Additional interviews with Serra's longtime rigger Ernst Fuchs, his companion and gallery owner Alexander von Berswordt, and renowned composer Philip Glass afford the viewer the opportunity to appreciate the artist's works from a variety of distinct perspectives.
