Out of Place

Out of Place is an insider's perspective of the small, underground community of surfers in Cleveland, Ohio. Theirs is a life of shared dedication to the water and waves that rarely come. Their best days are actually the coldest, courtesy of the harsh winter storms that sweep across Lake Erie. The city skyline makes for a compelling backdrop to their unique stories. The scene is a welcoming, throwback culture far removed from the commercialism and postcard perfect imagery that has made the surfing image a billion dollar industry. Out of Place recently premiered at the New York Surf Film Festival, TriBeCa Cinemas, winning the Viewer's Choice Award for Best Feature.

Out of Place is being shown as part of Lake Effects now showing at Heights Arts Gallery, a few steps from the Cedar Lee. Co-directors Darrin McDonald and Scott Ditzenberger will be available to answer questions after the screening.

Lake Effects—Lake Erie defines our climate, culture, and economy. This show presents a collective body of work by regional photographers who have reacted to the Lake in a variety of media. Curated by Linda Bourassa, the show includes work by Lori Kella, Michael Loderstedt, Gary Marmolya, Cynthia Penter, Renee Psiakis, Garie Waltzer, Darrin McDonald and Scott Ditzenberger.
